As easy as the ABC are all 21 smokes from this Ultimate Cobblestone Smoke Guide, be sure to learn them earlier rather than later.
Smokes are potentially game-winning tools at almost every level of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and yet people often forget about this important aspect of the game. This smoke guide will make it as easy for you to learn these 21 Cobblestone Smokes in an effective manner. You can also read the Cache, Train, Inferno and Mirage versions of the Ultimate Smoke Guide if you like.
This article will have the following structure for all smoke grenades:
The place which you will smoke - Pros and Cons - Visuals - A small video showing the smoke line-up
You can also find a video which contains all of the shown smokes in a run-through if you do not feel like looking at single pictures at the very end of this article.
Now, before I actually start to show you the smokes on Cobblestone, I'd like to tell you about smoke grenades and what a good smoke is. In order to do this, I can try to articulate the intended purpose of a smoke grenade in words: A smoke is supposed to mask your movement, in order to stay undetected, gain a safer passage, or deny vision of the enemy overseeing certain spots by removing his ability to see spots where you intended to take map control.
What does this mean for us?
Due to the nature of smokes and their intended purpose, a smoke will almost always be placed between two solid objects, like between the wall of B-Long on Cobblestone and the boxes close to the CT-Stairs at Titanic, in order to grant you a safer passage to your intended location. A good smoke, obviously, is one that covers the way all the way up to the destination.
But you will soon find out that you will have to compromise in some situations, as one smoke cannot fully cover the way you want to cross. If that is the case, then the following smoke is the better alternative if you have to leave a gap.
The gap is left at the side of the intended destination and does not give the enemy much visual contact to work with. It is unlikely that he can kill you through this small gap, especially since you are behind solid cover almost instantly.
Leaving the gap at the beginning will allow the enemy to trace your movement through your smoke quite easily, potentially spraying you down or AWPing you.
But, as always, be advised that you need to take into the account the height of the enemy, as this may allow him to see above or below your smokes.
My Crosshair
You will realise that I often have a crosshair that seems similar to my normal one but is incredibly long. This helps me find the line-ups I need, and I don't have to waste time double checking if I have the correct line-up. I have, however, forgotten where exactly I learned about it, so here are a few resources for you to read through.
You also have to keep in mind that my crosshair will most likely be different than yours. Yours may be smaller, longer, just a dot or something completely different. Therefore, you should compensate for your crosshairs while reading this guide. I will always write from my crosshairs' perspective, as it would be impossible to think of every possible crosshair and adjust the guide.
The Smokes
And now, finally, the part of the article you are looking for: The smokes. I will start off on the T-Side, go from A to B and then go over to the CT-Side to cover A and then B again. I will leave out all the overly intuitive and easy smokes, like simply dropping it with a right click into an area that you want to smoke off. Reminder: You can right click to view the picture in its original size!
T-Side
Courtyard - Matrix
What does it do?
This smoke is a quick and easy way to cover off the powerful Matrix position, which connects Water/Mid with A-Long and allows you to go into Mid with full force. It is suited for a fast, rushed throw and a mid-round throw. This one is really easy and doesn't need you to stand perfectly on one single pixel or carefully aiming at one specific pixel. You will only need to aim at the doorway from the courtyard and you runthrow.
How to throw
Stand around here...
...and aim at the upper end of the visible doorway in order to runthrow your smoke.
A-Long - Door
What does it do?
This will be one of the most important smokes thrown from the A-Long position, as the area where this smoke is thrown from is really easy to take for the Ts, staying safe from real danger while throwing. It covers the Door position, delaying or handicapping the retake attempt of the CTs.
How to throw
Find this window at Hay and stand centralised in front of it.
Now aim at this edge of the roof and walk until you cross with the dent in the wall.
A-Long - Swat
What does it do?
This smoke will smoke off a really strong position that is often held by riflers called Swat. This position normally allows vision onto every T entering the perimeter close to A.
How to throw
Stand in this corner.
And now aim at the left corner of the blue roof, touching the inner part of the very edge with your crosshair.
A-Long - Cubby
What does it do?
This smoke will be another crucial part of most set executes by teams adapting smokes from this guide. Cubby is a popular second entry point by the CTs who were cut off by your smoke in the door. Smoking it off will delay the retake or enable you to take the bombsite more comfortably.
How to throw
Stand in front of this battlement and place yourself centralised in front of the lighter part of the brick I am aiming at.
Now line your crosshair up with the two highlighted corners.
Barrell - Onspot split
What does it do?
This line-up will allow you to split the A-Bombsite in half, especially useful in anti-ecos, as you cut off popular camping spots with CTs in them trying to catch you off-guard.
How to throw
Find this corner at the Barrell position and aim at the top end of this lighting conductor.
Wood - Balcony
What does it do?
This line-up will smoke off a crucial part of the last stand of the CTs trying to hold off or damage your A-Site take. AWPers especially like to play from the Balcony position, trying to catch Ts who are crossing over from Wood to the bombsite.
How to throw
Stand at the left end of the invisible wall in this corner and aim at the part of the cable that is visible through the leaves of the tree.
T-Stairs - Speedway
What does it do?
This smoke will be one of the most important when you want to take the B-Bombsite without a strong Dropdown presence, enabling you to throw fakes with this line-up, too. It limits the angles you need to worry about while exiting B-Long to take the Bombsite.
How to throw
Stand on the edge of this staircase on the dark line in the tiles.
Now aim above this battlement on the close right edge of it.
B-Halls exit - B-Long Stairs
What does it do?
This smoke allows you to cancel out a few strong angles CTs like to hold on the new-ish Stairs position. The steps allow the player to jiggle up and down and the boxes at the broken wall in front of it make it this a strong position from where the CT can regulate which fights he wants to take if played out correctly. Taking this position away from the CT defence should allow you to take B with more confidence.
How to throw
Stand at this part of the archway at the B-Halls exit. Now you need to aim at the very top of the lightning conductor highlighted in the screenshots.
B-Halls exit - Broken Wall
What does it do?
This smoke is crucial for almost every kind of team, as it allows you to easier take Titanic/Stairs control on B-Long, as it shields you from the eyes of the CTs playing Onspot as well as Chicken Coop.
How to throw
Stand in this part of the Archway again.
Now aim above the wooden plank in the middle of the crates, right on the edge of the arch close to the broken wall
B-Long - Doors
What does it do?
This line-up allows you to safely cut off rotations and reinforcements the CTs might call in once this exact smoke lands. It also takes away an angle to care about when you want to cross to the middle of the bombsite.
How to throw
Stand in this corner...
... And aim between the boxes and the tower.
B-Long - Speedway
What does it do?
This line-up allows you to take away a few possibly dangerous positions from the CTs who are trying to defend the bombsite against your take. This version is more of a mid-round alternative to the T-Stairs one, allowing the thrower to be on the bombsite quickly.
How to throw
Stand in the corner that is shown in the upper left picture and now aim to the left of the shown window, just touching the lower left edge with your crosshairs right line.
B-Long - Tree
What does it do?
I have seen hundreds of variations of this smoke, but this one is the easiest I have found or come across. It allows you to smoke off the popular Tree boost with a single smoke, not allowing the boosted player to use the tree to his advantage.
How to throw
Stand in the corner shown in the upper left picture and then aim just to the left of the wall, still leaving it in the almost-middle area of your crosshair, lined up with the corner I have highlighted in the lower picture.
B-Long - Inside Chicken Coop
What does it do?
This smoke will smoke off the Chicken Coop completely, leaving no room for the CT to hide any longer, which forces him to take an unfavourable duel. Be advised that a flashy AWPer might try to stand right next to the smoke, waiting for someone to peek and then hide inside of the Chicken Coop after potentially killing your teammate.
How to throw
Stand inside of this corner. Again.
Now aim at the upper right corner of this wooden bar.
B-Long - Left side Chicken Coop
What does it do?
This is the alternative to the inside Chicken Coop smoke, which needs the smoke that I will show you below to be effective. It covers one side of the Chicken, parted with the following smoke, not leaving any real opportunity for the CT player inside Chicken Coop to get aggressive again.
How to throw
Just stand in this familiar corner.
Now aim at this shadow that is overlapping a line in the tile on top of the wall. Depending on your shadow settings, you may have to look for the line instead of the shadow.
B-Long - Right side Chicken Coop
What does it do?
This is the other part needed to take Chicken Coop out of the round in a different way than smoking the inside of it. It allows you to lock in the CT without much chances to do anything of value during the bombsite take.
How to throw
Stand in this Corner. It is a different corner this time, but I am sure that you can handle that.
Now aim to the left of the shown tree top, just touching it with the right and lower line of your crosshair.
B-Long - Onspot
What does it do?
This one is a bit hard to get right the first few times, but you will get it faster and faster each time. It splits the CTs in half and grants you an almost safe plant on the bombsite.
How to throw
Stand in the corner that is shown to you in the upper left picture and line your crosshair up parallel to the roof and touching the corner of these bricks just slightly, leaving your crosshairs line just below it.
Dropper - Doorway
What does it do?
This smoke is crucial for you if you want to take the Dropdown rather safely or you want to split A from the dropdown as well as A-Long/Water.
How to throw
Find this line in the left wall in Dropper...
... And aim at the highlighted, darker spot in the wall at the actual drop zone.
Dropper - Window
What does it do?
This line-up allows you, much like the Doorway line-up, to take away a strong position to limit the number of angles you have to cover when you drop into the Dropdown or allows you easier split B in this case, as you cannot get shot from the window any longer, allowing you to streamline into the bombsite.
How to throw
Stand on this part where the three tiles meet as shown in the upper two pictures. Now find the highlighted darker spot on the wall and aim at it before you throw.
CT-Side
A-Long - A-Long aggression
What does it do?
This line-up is useful for the CTs to use all of the little aggression potential that they have. It allows you to push out of A-Long without having to worry about an AWPer or rifler holding the all too popular angle outside of the arch visible in the pictures.
How to throw
Stand in this corner close to Hay.
Now aim above the shown battlements, touching the upper left edge of one of the battlements and keeping it in line with the battlement below my crosshair.
Dropdown - Dropper
What does it do?
This one is straightforward, and opinions may differ as to what a good smoke on this part of the map is. People are either convinced that throwing it further back will allow you to spot flashes earlier, but it leaves the risk of leaving a slight gap at the end close to the drop where a T may peek through to catch you off-guard. This line-up allows you to see the Ts before they can see you, as they have to jump through blindly, not being able to spot you before you can spot their gun barrel. It is also notable that you can hear left-click flashes, and if you are holding this spot together, you can play with one in the doorway and one playing antiflash (turned away from the drop) to be sure in all cases.
How to throw
Stand around here.
Aim below this protruding part of the drop.
B-Long - B-Halls exit
What does it do?
This smoke also allows you to milk your CT side for every drop of aggression you can get. It blocks of the Ts entrance to B-Long, possibly punishing for not taking it early on.
How to throw
Stand in this corner on the B-Long Stairs and aim at the upper right "corner" of the window.
All smokes line-ups in one video!
That is it for today and I hoped that you had fun finding out new ways to smoke off certain parts of maps and that you or your team will incorporate them into their standard strategies and plays. Thank you for sticking with this article all the way.
