Getting a Victory Royale isn’t as easy as people think, especially in ranked. So, here are some tips to make winning matches a tad bit easier.
Everyone wants that sweet Victory Royale, but we all know how difficult it can be, especially in competitive lobbies. With 99 players and RNG stack against you, it can be hard to win consistently. But this can be improved upon by fixing some mistakes and practicing.
These things go hand-in-hand with your normal training to improve your chances of winning more matches.
If you are dropping randomly every round, then you have already reduced your chances of winning. The early game is where most players die, so it’s the most important phase of the game.
Find a good landing spot and learn it by heart, memorize all the chest locations, floor loot spawns, and ammo boxes. Being familiar with your landing spots automatically increases your chances of survival in the early game.
This is also what a lot of pro players do; they find one or two good landing spots and master them throughout the season until they are comfortable. It’s also a good idea to make plans if you have a bad landing on your landing spot, like landing somewhere close, then rotating back to it.
It isn’t hard to do either. Just keep landing at the same few spots every match, and sooner or later, you will become familiar with that landing spot.
If you want a high kill game, then the early game is the best time to go for kills. Every player is usually busy looting or unprepared; a well-timed attack can easily get you a free kill.
On the other hand, if your POI is contested, you are going to fight that guy sooner or later. It’s much better to fight him early, as both of you will have limited loot and mats. Of course, fighting in this condition isn’t easy, but it’s much better than relying on RNG to get better loot.
Plus, the sooner you get rid of the enemy, the easier it will be to loot and prepare for the mid-game.
After selecting your landing spot, the next thing to do is make a rotation plan, i.e, what path you will take to get to the zone. The circle you get is completely random, so make sure to also have multiple rotation plans.
This will save you the indecisiveness of deciding where to go after clearing your drop spot. You can use interactive maps available on the internet to plan a route that is safe and gets you extra loot. Because when you clear the early game, you enter the mid-game, which is the most difficult phase in the game.
Another great tip, kind of related to rotations, is positioning. Always try to be in a position with the most advantage when you are in a fight. This could be playing from high ground or finding a place with good visibility of your surroundings.
Another example is playing to your enemy’s rotation. For instance, if you notice an enemy rotating out of the storm late, you can move to a position that will cut off his rotation, landing you a free kill.
Similarly, if you notice a fight taking place, find a good spot to third-party from where you can get an easy kill like this.
Just try to be aware of positioning, as it matters a lot in this game.
Another important thing about the mid-game is knowing when and when not to take fights. We know how fun it is to w-key the entire lobby, but in competitive lobbies, this playstyle usually gets you killed.
You need to be very decisive about taking on fights, because other players will be waiting to take advantage and third-party you.
When you do take a fight, always make sure you are not in the middle of the map and try to end the fight as quickly as possible. It’s also not a bad idea to retreat and escape from a fight if you think your chances of winning are low.
Always take fights where you have the advantage, whether that is more mats or health, better loot, or just better position.
But there are times when you must be aggressive. For instance, if you have a bad drop, it’s not a bad idea to fight someone for better loot. You already don’t have much to lose, so taking a high-risk fight here is worth it.
You will have to use your judgment to decide when and when not to take fights. This usually comes down to your playstyle and how you approach fights.
Much like any competitive game, a warm-up is important before jumping into a match. But we are not talking about free building for 5 minutes and then jumping in. What you need is a proper well-structured warm-up that focuses on everything: aim, mechanics, and movement.
It’s also a good idea to do some creative 1v1s, as it can warm up your dueling ability. How you warm up is up to you, just make sure to cover all the basics. There are tons of Creative maps that can help in warming up.
While this one is quite an obvious one, it’s still important to mention. For a competitive game like Fortnite, your settings matter a lot. This includes your video settings, keybinds, sensitivity, and such. You need to make sure all of these things are optimized. For instance, the video settings should be optimized to give you the highest frames and least input lag. Your sensitivity and keybinds should be tuned to your comfort level to maximize your potential.
These things don’t take too long, we already have a guide on video settings. Feel free to check it out.
The best way to improve is to learn from your mistakes, and to do that, you need to do VOD reviews, i.e., watching replays of your game.
This will allow you to catch mistakes that you wouldn’t make while playing. While watching, ask yourself questions like, “Was this fight necessary?”, “Why did I lose this fight?”, “Were my rotations correct?”, “Was my aim lacking?”, etc. You will soon find out many mistakes that you subconsciously make, and then you can work on preventing them.
It’s a bit boring to do this, but if you want to improve quickly, this is the best way.
The endgame is where the pressure and the chances to make mistakes are the highest. When you are so close to the victory, it’s easy to tense up and fumble the win.
In this case, always try to be patient and focus on surviving rather than winning. You are not the only one under pressure in the endgame; everyone is, so use that to your advantage. The one who is the calmest in the endgame has the highest chance to win, as they are less likely to make mistakes.
Scrims and Zone Wars are a great way to practice this as they simulate the pressure of endgame situations.
Just playing ranked isn’t the best way to improve. The Fortnite Creative library has tons of maps to practice and improve your game. You have got maps for aim training, editing, building, piece control as well as maps for practicing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4s and even unfavorable 2v1 or 3v2 situations.
That's not all. If you want to work on your endgame, you can try playing zone wars. If you want to improve your box-fighting, there are maps for that too. Here are some great maps to check out for practice.
